TDMM vs Cumberland: which fits your token?

TDMM and Cumberland do different jobs. Cumberland, a DRW company active in crypto since 2014, is an institutional OTC liquidity provider that trades major assets, options and forwards with approved counterparties, and its website describes no market making service for token issuers. TDMM is a retained market maker for token projects, quoting a project's own token on exchanges and DEXs. A foundation might use both.

Who is Cumberland?

Cumberland is the crypto trading arm of DRW, the Chicago trading firm, and says it has led in crypto since 2014. It is a principal trading firm: it quotes a price, trades against its own balance sheet and settles after the trade with no prefunding. Its products are OTC spot liquidity in dozens of cryptocurrencies and stablecoins, block and exchange-traded derivatives, and bilateral options and forwards under ISDA agreements, delivered by voice, chat, API and its Marea platform.

Cumberland entities hold a New York BitLicence and a Singapore digital payment token licence, and a UK affiliate is FCA-authorised. Its disclosures state that it is not a fiduciary or adviser and acts in its own interests. In October 2024 the US SEC sued Cumberland alleging that it operated as an unregistered dealer; the SEC and Cumberland agreed to dismiss the case with prejudice in March 2025, with the SEC saying the decision did not reflect an assessment of the merits. Cumberland's website does not describe retained market making for a token issuer's own token.

Where is Cumberland strong?

Part of DRW, with more than 30 years of trading and risk management behind it.

  • Licensed entities

Regulated entities in New York, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

  • Large OTC trades

Institutional-size trades in major assets and stablecoins with post-trade settlement and no prefunding.

  • Hedging instruments

Bilateral options and non-deliverable forwards under ISDA, mainly in BTC and ETH.

Where does TDMM differ from Cumberland?

  • TDMM quotes your token

TDMM keeps two-sided markets in a project's own token on exchange order books and DEX pools. Cumberland trades established assets with institutions.

  • Contracted obligations

A TDMM mandate sets maximum spread, minimum depth and uptime per venue. An OTC desk has no continuing obligation to a token's market.

  • Open to small and new tokens

TDMM works with tokens before and just after listing. Cumberland lists dozens of assets and requires counterparty approval.

  • Listing and launch support

TDMM prepares liquidity for listings and token launches.

How does an OTC trade differ from a market making mandate?

An OTC trade is a single transaction at a quoted price. A mandate is a continuing obligation to a token's market.

  1. OTC desk: requestThe counterparty asks for a price in a size
  2. OTC desk: quote and tradeThe desk quotes; the trade is done against its balance sheet
  3. OTC desk: settleAssets and cash settle after the trade; the relationship ends there
  4. Mandate: targetsSpread, depth and uptime agreed per venue
  5. Mandate: quote continuouslyBids and asks on exchanges and pools at all hours
  6. Mandate: reportPerformance reported against targets each period
Steps one to three describe an OTC trade and steps four to six a retained market making mandate.

What should you ask both firms before signing?

  • Will you quote my token, and where?

For a new or small token, confirm the firm trades it at all and on which venues.

  • Are you acting for me or against me?

A principal desk trades for its own account. A retained market maker works to a mandate. Know which you are dealing with.

  • What is the all-in cost?

For OTC, the cost is in the price. For a mandate, it is the fee or the value of the options.

  • What onboarding do you require?

Counterparty approval, minimum sizes and documentation differ widely.
